Meet the Conference Support Team

BCUR14 is supported by a dedicated team of student volunteers drawn from across a range of schools and departments. This carefully selected team of volunteers brings a range of skills and experiences to the conference, from social media expertise to audio-visual skills, to knowledge about the local context of the University of Nottingham. You will recognise the team by looking for the royal blue shirts on the day, but meet them here online:

The Staff

Martin On West Lomond 0803010Martin Luck

Associate Professor of Animal Physiology and Senior Tutor, Faculty of Science. University of Nottingham Key Organiser for BCUR 2014. Martin is known nationally and internationally for promoting research as the best way for undergraduates to own their subject. He wrote a guide for students and has spoken widely about the benefits of learning through research. Students gain skills plus the intellectual satisfaction of experiencing the “limits of confident knowledge”. By stepping to the edge, peering over and discovering more, they appreciate that knowledge is ephemeral, understanding is provisional and progress is challenging.

practice from the nineteenth century to the present day. I am also a theatre reviewer, most often for the TLS.I’m interested in Shakespeare as performed in contemporary contexts, including on film, and I have been careers liaison in English for the last few years….so love the opportunity to get involved with anything, like BCUR, that can foster skills related to employability in our students. For BCUR14, I have been working closely with the Student Volunteer Team on all aspects of employability.

I’m Mandy Roshier and I can usually be found teaching at Nottingham Vet School. My research interests are varied and have enabled me to get involved in an unusual mix of projects, these include: training blindfolded horses to complete a maze (just the one eye was covered!), investigating the mechanisms behind whiplash injury, application of technology in education, fly-on-the-wall observations of vets in practice, interpreting animal communication… I’m looking forward to hearing all about your research, have a fantastic time!

Hi! I am a first year Nutrition and Food Science student and I come from Singapore. Nottingham’s a beautiful city and so far I’ve had a amazing experience here. I’ve made so many friends from all around the world, heard so many great stories and learnt so much. Being part of BCUR 14 has further helped me broaden my perspective, and I hope it will be the same for you too!”

I am a second year Finance, accounting and management student. The decision to study this

course came from my immense interest in business studies related subjects. My decision to participate as a conference volunteer is one of the best I have ever made. It is because firstly, this  is a very prestigious activity to be a part of. In addition, I’ve met many amazing people most of whom have become dear friends and I can’t express how eager I am to apply all the skills we’ve been taught during the training sessions for real, during the actual conference. If any one wants to participate in the same I am open to questions:)!!!

Hello!

Charlotte Lawson

Charlotte Lawson

I am a second year student at the University of Nottingham reading for a degree in Environmental Sciences with a certificate in European studies. Whilst working towards my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award I undertook an array of volunteering, from ice skating children to walking and playing with dogs, so the delegates of #bcur14 are in safe hands! When not saving the world through the toils of volunteering, I play an array of sports – netball and polo to name a couple – and manage to squeeze in some time to study!
The thing that astonishes me about #bcur14 is that all the delegates are my age and have created their research projects as extra work on top of their degree! As a reward for their hard work, the least I can do as a volunteer is to make #bcur14 as easy and enjoyable for them as possible.

Hi! My name is Emma Russell. I am a second year student of Art History here at the University

of Nottingham and I also work at the Lakeside Arts Centre based on campus. I love to get involved with events and societies from doing abseiling for St Mungo’s to being Vice President of the Art History Society. I volunteered to work at the conference because it seemed like a good opportunity to get to know the way conferences work and I wanted to get involved with a prestigious event at my home university. I also wanted to get involved because it was specifically for undergraduate research as I respect that it is an important event that puts focus upon research at my level. I very much look forward to working with everyone; other volunteers and speakers alike and am excited to hear all the papers.

Being part of this large event will allow me to further develop my knowledge and experience in Conference and Events Management. Besides, the event opens more doors to meeting delegates my age with diverse interests!

Hey there! I’m currently a first year English student at UoN. I’m constantly looking for things/people/happenings to inspire me. And I’m sure the overwhelming amount of great ideas in #BCUR14 will definitely do so and having the absolute honour to volunteer is just surreal!

I aspire to go into arts administration and be more involved in the third sector so I can build on the knowledge I gained through the array of charity works (fundraising and campaigning) I’m doing right now. Feel free to talk to me about theatre, literature, performing arts, charities- anything really! Tweet me on @vblacg and if you want to know more about me, go to malenacats.wordpress.com to (hopefully) get inspired as I have been inspired. Can’t wait to see you all in Nottingham! Big love!

Megan Shore

Megan Shore

Megan Shore- Hello, I’m Megan, a 2nd year French and History student looking forward to my year abroad next year! I’m excited about welcoming you all to our beautiful campus and making sure everyone has a great time at BCUR14!

I am an Environmental Science student in the University of Nottingham.. After developing a keen interest in wanting to explore how environmental mechanism works, I proceeded to having an in-depth academic quest into the human-environment inter-relationship. This search for knowledge has not stopped me from developing my passion in voluntary work and contributing immensely to my society. It is part of my dedication to excellence that has made me a part of this great University and also be a part of the historical remarkable conference. I am looking forward to welcome, to meet and to listen to all participants in the BCUR conference.
